He founded the Congress in 1943 that became the Malawi Congress Party — and then stood aside for younger men in a hurry. Independence came out of the organisation he built.
Born around 1900 near the Domasi Presbyterian Mission in what is now southern Malawi, James Frederick Sangala was a founder and the acting secretary of the Nyasaland African Congress in 1943, formed to give the local associations a unified voice and to press for African rights.
He was president of the Congress from 1954 to 1956, and was persuaded to resign in favour of more radical members pushing for full independence. Renamed the Malawi Congress Party, it won every seat in the 1961 elections and carried the country to self-government in 1963 and independence in 1964.
